Badlands National Park has over 240,000 acres of badlands including sharply eroded buttes, pinnacles and spires blended with the largest, protected mixed grass prairie in the United States. Inside the park, the Badlands Wilderness Area covers 64,000 acres and is home to an amazing number of animals, including bison, bighorn sheep, foxes and the endangered black-footed ferrets -- the most endangered land mammal in North America. The Badlands were established as the Badlands National Monument in 1939, the area was redesignated a "National Park" in 1978
