Some of America's earliest communities were built by the ancestors of the Pueblo people in the area called Bandelier near Los Alamos, NM over 600 years ago. Many of the Ancestral Pueble dewllings still exist in the pink mesas and steep canyons. Many of the dwellings were inhabited from about 1100 A.D. into the mid-1500s A.D. Bandelier National Monument is open year-round and offers lots of opportunities for short hikes or serious backpacking. The National Park Service has more information about Bandelier National Monument here..
